Submission Guidelines

49 Writers is the lead organization for a memoir anthology written by Municipality of Anchorage residents, 50 years and older, who have personal stories about Anchorage and Chugiak-Eagle River over the years to share with the community. The anthology will be representative of Anchorage's diverse population, including Native elders, pioneers, veterans, and immigrants who now call the city home.

An editorial board will select about 30 personal stories for inclusion in the anthology, to be published locally. Our goal is to make the anthology available for purchase in time for the 2014 holiday season.

Submissions not selected for the anthology will be published on this blog.

Submitting Online (preferred)

  • The submission period opens April 3, 2014 and closes at midnight on June 30, 2014.
  • Submissions will be made online via the 49 Writers, Inc. Submission Manager at the following link: https://anchorageremembers.submittable.com/submit
  • Individual writers may submit up to two previously unpublished stories.
  • Each story submitted to the Anchorage Remembers anthology should be 750-1,500 words in length and relate a personal memory about living in Anchorage. Your story will ideally describe a unique experience or insight on a historical event from your point of view. We are looking in particular for stories that feature strong characters or highlight a lesser-known aspect of the city's history.
  • Writers who submit must be willing to receive feedback from the editorial board, in case they recommend edits as a condition of publication.
  • The document you submit must be in either Microsoft Word or PDF format.
  • Each submission requires the author’s name and contact information (email, phone number, and mailing address), along with a 100-200 word biography.
